The other week I was walking down a street in the Mission and my eyes almost fell out of my face due to shock when I saw something I’d never think I’d see in San Francisco before: A 99 CENT STORE.

Say WHAT? In the land of designer coffee, $7 artisan chocolate bars and rent that makes us cry… the last thing I’d expect to see in our expensive ass (albeit glorious) city is a discount store.

That got me wondering if there were other discount stores in the city– where were they? We had to find them. Because even a six figure salary person knows that budgeting is a very real thing here.

We compared a trip to Walgreens to a trip to a discount store this week and wrote down just how much we could be saving:

At Walgreens: for a pack 40 paper plates, 25oz dish soap, a pack of highlighters, 8″ handle scissors, 120 ct bobby pins, a large bag of cotton balls, a standard box of 30 bandaids, nail polish remover (8oz), large pack of Q-tips, and a single big roll of paper towels.. before tax, it was $37.20.

For the SAME THING (albeit lesser quality) at a discount store… it was $15.75! QUITE the difference no?

Discount stores are the shit! Sure, the toilet paper might stick to your ass more but it does get the job done.

And when I’m replenishing my house supplies… dish washing soap, cleaning agents, sponges, trash bags, etc… I don’t really care where they are from as long as they are efficient. And discount house supplies are efficient AF!

Also kitchen supplies: Sandwich bags, plastic wrap, aluminum foil… might as well save when you can!

What about decorations? And desk supplies? Even some beauty supplies like hair bands and bobby pins. The discount store prices are WAY lower.

I am however hesitant on medicine and food though… but maybe that’s just me being froo-froo and overly cautious.
