So let’s talk about my favorite activity in the world: HOT POT

And yes… I consider it to be an activity. Lol.

To say that I “hot pot” all the damn time… is an understatement. Here’s proof:

It’s perfect for GRUBBIN hard after a Barrys Bootcamp workout, or when I want to eat healthy and go carb-free for the night.

It’s also super fun to hang with friends, have a beer, and dip endless stuff into one big bowl of steaming hot soup.

If you’ve had Japanese shabu shabu, then it’s kind of a similar experience… except Cantonese hot pot is WAY BETTER times a million.

… and it’s ALL YOU CAN EAT (<– Yep, you can thank me later or thank me now).

For those of you who have never had hot pot before? Let me help you pop that hot pot cherry. Here’s a list of everything you need to know.

Before you begin:

+ They’ll give you a sheet of paper and pen. You get to mark down ANYTHING your heart desires. If you want 3 plates of kobe beef… just put “3” next to the box.

+ Make your own sauce: they provide a sauce base (tastes like a sweetened soy sauce). Then you get to mix anything else you want in it: fresh garlic, scallions, cilantro and chili.

How to cook:

+ First, let your broth come to a boil before you dunk anything into it.

+ Once your soup is boiling, you can start cooking. Check to make sure your food is cooked thoroughly:

~ Meat will usually cook within seconds (if you’re not sure… just keep it in for an extra 30 seconds)

~Veggies: don’t really need to worry about them. You can leave them in as fast/long as you want.

~ Fish, fishballs, wontons, meatballs: it needs to be “floating” before you can eat it.

+ Keep in mind that whatever you put in will change the flavor of the broth. (Meat || Seafood)

+ Lastly, ask for separate utensils to handle cooked and uncooked food. You don’t want to mix the two. I usually keep a pair of chopsticks for eating, and another pair to dunk my meat into. (But if you do use your own chopsticks, just make sure to dunk it into the broth for a few seconds to kill off any bacteria).

There really is no right or wrong way to eat hot pot. You can either do it slowly, by adding in a certain dish/flavor at a time OR just say F it and throw everything into the pot. It’s all about having a good time: sharing, cooking, and grubbing together with your friends and family.
