Contouring… winged eye liner… yeah fuggin’ right! I haven’t upped my makeup game since I was in high school. My skin care regime is on point, but makeup… not so much. Any of you relate?

It’s not that I don’t like makeup, I actually love it! I just don’t enjoy the process of doing it anymore so I never take the time to study the craft, you know? I kinda do what I do and get on with life. lol

Or I don’t wear any makeup at all.

There was a time once when I had really nice makeup, and not a single item wasn’t from Sephora. Don’t get me wrong, my makeup skills still sucked but higher quality makeup helped. Then I moved to San Francisco to start my own company (bootstrapped) so all that nice makeup went out the window real quick. Gotta make sacrifices!

These days I’ve been buying most my makeup at Walgreens. I have legit reverted back to many of my high school ways- buying the same bronzer, eye liner, and lip gloss that I had last worn back in 2005. I told myself, “I bet drugstore brands are the same anyway! I’ve probably been scammed into paying more all these years. This is definitely a good thing!”

Um yeeaahh…. let me just tell you it’s been over a year since I’ve been using drug store brands and it freaking sucks. It does not compare to the higher quality ish. Just doesn’t. I miss the expensive stuff so much!

Now obviously there are some drugstore brands that people swear by. Like Revlon lip stains- love those. And I’ve heard that Wet n’ Wild matte lipsticks are awesome and stay on forever. People love Great Lash by Maybelline. There are other exceptions to the rule and YES my drugstore makeup face would look better if I really knew what I was doing… but for the most part, I don’t want to do this much longer. Drug store brands don’t compare- at least not for me.

Here’s what I’ve been using (still am using):

Like just look at this shit.

This “mineral” powder bronzer is NOT ground up that well. It’s by Bonne Belle, and unless I take 15 minutes to put it on properly -and I never have give myself 15 minutes to put it on properly- then it looks streaky AND splotchy. No bueno, man.

Queue Cynthia: “She gets this shit ALL over my room. And car….”

Shiny Kiss? More like Shitty Kiss, Victoria’s Secret. This lip gloss looks good for the first half hour before it starts to make a clumped up “O” ring thing. Why do I keep wearing this? WHY?

Queue Cynthia: “Girl. We NEED to upgrade your lip game.” (She made me try lip liner last week for the first time in my life… what up Kylie Jenner.)

Eyeliner that 100% always gravitates towards the corner of my eyeballs and also likes to sit in my crease.

And wowwww has my mascara been through the ringer or what? You can’t make this stuff up you guys. My makeup game is pathetic on all accounts. I do love that mascara though.

Queue Cynthia: “Nope your mascara also sucks.”

Oh yes, there’s that dreaded eyeshadow that I just can’t seem to blend. Time to kick THAT to the curb.

Seriously, my friends have always given me crap about my eyeshadow looking whack. They’re joking but… are they really? Haha. As my makeup artist friend Tiffany always says, “blend until you think you don’t have to and then blend some more!” Having a hard time grasping that I guess! 😛  And I’m still hanging on by thread with my Mac eyeshadow base, but I wonder if that has not been doing me a solid either.

Queue Cynthia: “I don’t know if it’s the shadow or the way you put it on but… it just makes me laugh… in kind of a sad way.”

Queue Cynthia: “Nailed it.”

So here’s what I want. I’m throwing in the towel! I am willing to invest in a new makeup care routine -aka I have another Nieman Marcus gift card I’ve been saving lol- so unless we get this sponsored (please please please! haha) I’m going to use that.

These are the kind of products I want- do y’all have any suggestions?

+A solid primer and foundation that is kinda dewy because I don’t like the matte look for me. One of them has to have at least SPF 30 in it!

+A bronzer that blends super well and stays

+Eyeshadow that BLENDS like a mother f*cker, doesn’t crease and lasts all day

+A good concealer (I’ve tried my friend’s NARS concealer before and I loved it! Any others?)

+An eyeliner that stays in place, but also one that I don’t have to tug at to get off when washing my face. I’m actually fine with my mascara though! Maybelline Stiletto… I’m all about it.

+A no fuss routine for the prettiest pout that works with my skin tone

THAT’S ALL I ASK! 😉 *praying hands emoji*

Oh and P.S, Cynthia is making me go to an Anastasia CONTOURING class this week. *eye roll* I think that’s a little much but I guess I should take all the help I can get right?

So there’s my sad, pathetic makeup routine and what I hope to upgrade to! Any makeup tips, tricks, channels, artists, or brands you swear by? Seriously- LET A SISTA KNOW. Sista needs help. Sista needs help big time.

Hey! I work for Sephora and see/test plenty of makeup. Here’s some of my req’s 🙂 I could go on and on though haha

+ Foundation: I bet the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue would work for you. It’s too shiny/dewy on me (matte fan over here) but all my colleagues swear by it. And check out the Becca highlighters (Opal and Moonstone are the bomb) to add extra dewiness to your complexion
+Bronzer: Benefit Hoola or Nars Laguna FTW
+The trick to getting eyeshadow to stay all day is to use a eyelid primer. Urban Decay’s are the best.
+Undereye concealer: Sephora Collection! (this doesnt help with your Neiman gift card haha)
+Eyeliner: Lancome’s new Drama-Liqui pencils are the shit. Urban Decays 24/7 liners are also great.
+One of my favorite lip tricks: this green lipstick that when in contact with moisture (aka lips) turns the prettiest shade of pink- works on all skin tones! Super cheap so perfect girlfriend gift too

    – Foundation: I swear by Estee Lauder DoubleWear – read the reviews. It is amazing! And I’ve tried a lot of the high end foundations.
    – Concealer – I love NARS creamy formula. It goes great as a brightener under eyes and as a concealer.
    – Bronzer: Agree NARS is great, but I think bronzer is one of those items you can still buy at a drugstore and get quality results, especially Physicians Formula. Try to avoid anything with sparkles in the formula…
    – Eyeshadow – I love Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier…. The NARs duos are fantastic. Avoid palettes unless they get rave reviews. People like Urban Decay Naked palettes
    – Lipstick – another I think you can get away with stocking up on drugstore brands. I do really respect the quality and staying power of MAC and the Yves Saint Laurent Volupté Tint-In-Oil is AMAZING but pricey.
    – Eyeliner – I continue to shop around, for just an everyday pencil I like Bobbi Brown but I still get fall-out which is so not attractive. Thinking of switching to Kat Von D because she really delivers quality staying power in her products. Don’t be scared by the colors and her tattoos. The woman knows makeup. Also Bobbi Brown gel pots are awesome for a heavier eye look. I SWEAR by the navy color. Beautiful and fairly easy to apply (vs. scary black liquid liner)

In general – you can trust NARS, Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, YSL. I’ve heard good things about Anastasia products…. Good luck! I’ll take you to Sephora ANY TIME! I treat it as my personal beauty salon 

Girl, can I just tell you that I’m an avid CVS makeup shopper, and my way to fix it is that I tell myself on the weekly I’m gonna start watching YouTube makeup tutorials, as if that will do the trick?! Haha, never once done it, feel like Bambi in makeup stores and still need help…
