Not to be blunt, but when I was detoxing off of a 13-year addiction to Adderall…. I was so, so tired. I no longer had this insane buzz of energy that I got from Adderall and I was fatigued all the time. My neurotransmitters were MESSED UP. So what to do?
Constant fatigue is a problem for a lot of people.
I couldn’t pump myself full of tons and tons of coffee all day, because there is such thing as too much of a good thing, so I turned to a mighty adaptogen: MACA.
And damn did it help me out. This article will talk about the benefits of maca and how to use maca powder.
***I am so excited about this article btw, it’s sponsored by Karen Berrios who sources the BEST, PUREST MACA I have ever tried. Use code 20VFOGOFF for 20% off! It’s also available on amazon. 🙂
What is Maca?
Maca is a vegetable (cruciferous veggie, actually!) that comes from the Andes Mountains of Peru. It’s scientific name is Lepidium Meyenii. What we ingest is the ROOT.
Maca is mainly known for increasing fertility, stamina, endurance, and energy. Some people even call it the “Peruvian Ginseng.”
It’s an adaptogen and you can feel the benefits instantly. It’s looked with nutrients by the way- a highly attractive plant to eat if you ask me.
As the body and health ebbs and flows into peak health times and not-so-peak health times, I had forgotten about Maca for awhile. I don’t know why- I just had. Then about six weeks ago, I was at Juiceland and was looking for an added boost in my smoothie (I was feeling tired) and I was like, “I haven’t had Maca in awhile… I’ll get that.”
After my smoothie, I was feeling amazing. Clear-headed and focused. DAMN!! I had forgotten how impressively Maca performs for a gal!! I instantly ordered from Karen Berrios (and some Camu Camu too!) and I was so in awe of how it was sourced, the quality, and how EFFECTIVE it was that I immediately wanted to work with Karen.
NOT ALL MACA IS THE SAME. Omg– there is lot of crap maca out there. Unfortunately, there are a lot of maca powders that come from China where it’s just not as good. (The best kind is from Peru.) When it comes from China, the health benefits can not be preserved in that climate and soil. The climate and elevation in the Andes in Peru is ~4200 meters above sea level, so it’s a really high altitude and the soil is perfect for that type of food (maca). China cannot replicate those factors. The other thing about Karen Berrios is that their maca powder combines all three colors of maca (red, black and yellow), which offers the combination of all the health benefits of each into one powder- AMAZING. Lastly, Karen Berrios Maca is gelatinized- which makes it easily absorbable and preserves the most nutrients! Raw is tougher to absorb.
I am so happy to have reintroduced Maca back into my diet. It helps me cut back on coffee and just makes my brain feel good.
Maca is kind of a sweet, nutty flavor. It’s not even green (which most people expect), it’s beige!
What the research says: The Benefits of Maca
+Yowza baby…. studies have shown that is can increase sexual stamina and fertility in both men and women. It’s also been shown to reduce menopausal symptoms. Why not, eh? 😉 Fertility is important for both women AND men. [Resource + another resource]
+Some preliminary studies show that it can enhance athletic performance (hence the added energy kick!) And my goodness does it give you an energy kick! Actually more like a smooth marathon. [Resource + Resource]
+Helps with depression. Another preliminary study has shown it can have an effect in acting as an antidepressant for women. A Chinese study has also concluded this- although their test subjects were a control group of premenopausal women. [Resource + Resource]
+Helps with stress and stamina. Again, Maca is an adaptogen, which: “are thought to increase the body’s resistance to stress, and to generally enhance physical and mental functioning” It helps balance you out where you need balance. [Resource + additional resource]
+Rich in essential amino acids and protein. Also vitamin C! <—- And we can all use more of that. [Resource]
How To Use Maca Powder
I like to use it in my smoothies OR…. my current favorite: POPSICLES.
A single teaspoon of Maca does the trick for me and in these popsicles, each one has a teaspoon!
Maca Popsicle Recipe
First off- the benefits of this popsicle go beyond JUST what the maca will give you. It also has honey in it (manuka or local is best) which is anti-microbial and rich in antioxidants. It also has cinnamon in it which balances blood sugar, and then some coconut milk for some healthy fat.
Ingredients for 3 popsicles (Roughly 2.6oz each)
3 teaspoons maca
1 cup coconut milk
1 heaping tablespoon of honey (add more to make sweeter)
1 heaping teaspoon of cinnamon
All you do is blend it together and FREEZE! So easy to do.
If you want to have a beautiful bag of Maca sitting in your pantry ready to use- I highly recommend Karen Berrios. She also has a pill form which is effective- if a powder isn’t your thing! Again, I’ve never tried such an incredible maca product. And 20VFOGOFF gets you 20% off! Remember- it’s also on Amazon!
